One of the most amazing places where I have explored in my life is Phang Nga Bay. So far, I have been there innumerous time whether by boat, car, on a bike, a fancy yacht, a typical longtail, an adventurous kayak and even on a Chinese Junk and, to be honest, each time has left me a new and unforgettable experience. I have seen this place in every state such as when it’s sunshine, cloudy or raining: It gives you a feeling that Phang Nga is putting on a different dress for each occasion.
The most luxurious way we have so far when paid a repeated visit to Phang Nga was on a prestige cruise. At that time, we were really added a surreal touch of the day by drinking chilled white wine on the front deck and admiring the majestic cliffs rising high above our heads. The now famous John Gray Seacanoe alos fulfilled our trip. We visitted there with a kayak. This place is described at length on the Hong by Starlight page. Our trip began when the Kayak silently glided in narrow passages. The only sound we heard was the sound of birds, the cicadas and the gentle flic floc of the paddlers takes you into a magical world.
One of the most exotic means transportations we have tried was the famous chinese junk leaving to Phang Nga Bay on an early weekend morning. We had a chance to gaze the clear night sky and the glowing starts while lying on really fluffy cushions on top of the desk. I remembered my most unforgettable moment is to be in a total darkness, quietly drifting by those gigantic dark rocks obscuring the star lit skies.
I must say that Phang Nga bay has its own aspects and characteristics to become famous. It is obvious that some attraction might not be so attractive comparing to other places. But we have to mention the world famous’James Bond Island’ where loads of tourists come to visit daily and it is a must on the program. The real name of this rock formation is Koh Tapu, which means ‘Nail Island” well justified by its funny elongated and unbalanced shape. There is also a tiny island next to it is a place where many longtail boats permanently disembark hordes of tourists for the usual and unavoidable ‘James bond Island’ photo. I also took one picture but I won’t show it to you.
There is another island called “Koh Panyee” where every boat trip program has to include a visit. The incredible fact is the big village here was exclusively built from fishing and tourisme. It can be full as the James Bond Island at some points of the day or the season. I highly recommend you to visit this island out of the peak period and you will have the whole island only for yourself. Interested in this island ? We also have an entire post about Koh Panyee.
If you want to book boat rides to pay a visit to Phang Nga Bay, it is so convenient and can be done from your hotel. The trip will include lunch and all the transfer costs. I will just skip and not list everything on here. I have a friendly suggestion though for you to do it on your own and drive to Surakul pier in Phang Nga. From there, you can join a longtail boat or rent you own if you want your private space. Be prepared as it’s not the cheapest choice but the experience is worthy.
You will have lots of fun driving from Phuket to Phang Nga. The road passing by Phang Nga town, more of a discreet small village, it lined by the same incredibly high cliffs covered with dense vegetation. At the intersection of Phang Nga Town and Krabi road, there is a beautiful park hidden from view featuring an small intricate maze of caves well paved and fun to explore. This park is very famous and many locals like to come to spend time picnic near the cave. You can rest assured as the food and drink vendors are all around the place… This is definitely a really nice small stop. However, we would like to you be aware the naughty little monkeys who are ready to steal your food and belongings.
On your way, there is one moer remarkable attraction that is worth a visit is Wat Suwan Khuha with the gigantic golden reclining Buddha located inside a cave… There lots of misbehaved monkeys so you’d better be careful. No matter which ways you choose to visite but your trip to Phuket will be a complete one with the visit the world famous Phang Nga Bay.
